Piedmont is an inland region and has no coastline. The Alps protect the region from the perturbations of the Europe north; the mountains become hills which lead to the Po vally Plain rice is grown. From Spring to Summer the plain is covered with water which looks like a giant mirror.

In the alpine areas it can be quite cold in the Winter but sunny and cool in the Summer. The plain has cold Winters and often dry, warm summers. Unfortunately, one of the main characteristics of the Po Valley is the Winter fog which often closes the airports.
